The Women Who Look After Everyone Deserve an Adventure, Too
Why 2027 could be the year you finally put yourself in the calendar.
There's a particular kind of tiredness that can arrive towards the end of the year.
It's not always the kind a good night's sleep fixes.
It's the tiredness of being the person who remembers. The person who organises. The person who notices what's needed before anyone has asked.
The work deadlines. The family arrangements. The appointments, the messages, the birthdays, the plans for everyone else.
You might love your family. You might care deeply about your work. You might be proud of everything you've built.
And still, somewhere along the way, you may have found yourself wondering:
When was the last time I had something wonderful to look forward to that was just for me?
Not a weekend spent coordinating everyone's needs. Not a holiday where you're still checking the bookings and making sure everything runs smoothly.
Something different.
Something that gives you a reason to look forward to next year.
A long lunch, an idea - and 12 women who said yes
At GirlsTrek, we heard a story that captures this beautifully.
Sam Cobb and her university friends — affectionately known as the Gatton Girls — had stayed connected over the years, even as careers, children, distance and life's unexpected turns shaped their lives.
Then, over a long lunch, someone suggested they do something for their 50th birthdays.
What began as an idea became a group of 12 women who travelled to Tasmania for an adventure together.
When asked why they chose a walking trip, Sam's answer was telling. They enjoyed being active, but, as she explained, it wasn't really about the hiking. It was about the time together.
They walked, cycled, kayaked, shared meals and talked. They heard stories they might never have heard over a quick coffee or a busy family gathering.
And they didn't have to organise everything themselves.
Reflecting on the experience, Sam described the pleasure of being able to walk during the day, then sit by a fire, enjoy beautiful food and stay somewhere lovely.
For women who are often the organisers in everyday life, having the details taken care of felt like a dream.

What if you didn't have to organise this one?
Perhaps you are the person who plans the family holiday, remembers the details and makes sure everyone is happy.
Perhaps you lead a team at work, support your family at home and spend most of your days making decisions.
Or perhaps life has changed. The children are older, your priorities are shifting, or you have simply realised there are places you've always wanted to see and things you've always wanted to try.
Whatever your circumstances, you don't need to wait for a milestone birthday or a perfectly quiet year to plan something for yourself.
A GirlsTrek adventure gives you the chance to step into a different rhythm.
Walk beautiful trails. Take in sweeping views. Share stories with women you may never otherwise have met. Enjoy delicious food and welcoming accommodation after a rewarding day outdoors.
You can join a group on your own or plan a private adventure with friends. And with the practical details thoughtfully organised, you can spend less time coordinating and more time enjoying the experience.
“But am I fit enough?” And what if I come alone?
These are fair questions - especially if it's been a while since you've taken on a physical challenge, or you're considering travelling without a friend.
GirlsTrek offers adventures with different activity levels, so the aim is to find the right fit for you, rather than expecting you to fit a particular mould.
You don't need to be an expert hiker. You do need to choose an adventure that suits your current fitness and prepare for its demands. GirlsTrek can help you understand what's involved and how to get ready.
And you don't need to wait until you have a group of friends who can all make the same dates work.
Many women join a GirlsTrek group independently. The shared experience of walking, exploring and enjoying time together creates opportunities for connection along the way.
You arrive as yourself. You share the adventure. You may leave with friendships that continue long after you've unpacked your walking shoes.
Give your ‘27 calendar something to look forward to
By the time December arrives, it can be tempting to promise yourself that next year will be different.
You'll make more time. You'll get away. You'll finally do that thing you've been talking about.
But the calendar fills quickly.
Planning now gives you something more than a booking. It gives you time to choose an adventure that excites you, prepare at your own pace and anticipate the experience ahead.
Perhaps 2027 is the year you explore a new corner of Australia. Perhaps it's time for a walking holiday with friends, or a bigger international adventure you've been dreaming about for years.
You don't have to know all the answers yet. Start by exploring what's possible.
You've spent years making room for everyone else. There's room for you, too.
