NEW CALEDONIA TRIBAL TREK

8 DAYS / 7 NIGHTS

EX NOUMEA

  • Arrive La Tontouta International Airport, New Caledonia

Our local guide will meet us on our arriving flight from Australia. From here we will drive north to the inland area of Bourail. With time permitting we can take a small excursion out to the coast line of this area.

Tonight we stay at Betikure Eco Lodge. This tranquil setting is a wonderful start to your New Caledonia experience. Tonight's dinner is a set course french cuisine delight!

    Meals: Dinner

  • From the eco hotel we have a one and half hour drive over to the east coast and the Tchamba Tribe for the start of our trek.

New Caledonia has two multi-day trekking trails, the GR NORD and the GR SUD. We will be trekking the GR NORD. This trail allows those who choose the road less travelled to visit with Kanak tribes, spending your nights while on the trail in traditional huts and enjoying traditional food.

We will be walking the GR NORD from south to north.

Trek Tchamba to St Thomas - 20.6 kms Ascends 790m Descends 780m 7 hours + breaks

After an greeting ceremony with the Tchamba tribe chief we set off on our journey along the GR Nord. The first part of this trail is through banana and coffee planations near Tchamba tribe before we begin the steady climb.

There is abundant birdlife on this section of the trail. Enjoy the birdsong as you steadily climb 470 metres over 5 kilometres. Once you reach the high point we descend 600 metres over approximately 8 kilometres,

Tonight we stay at St Thomas tribe.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek St Thomas to Pombei - 19.3 kms Ascend 960m Descend 970m 7 hrs + breaks

Today we have our longest walking day with challenging terrain. We are lucky to walk through primary forest and savannah lands, and along ridges. Again today there will be a number of river crossings.

After an initial flat walk for a couple of kilometres we have a steep climb out of the valley. We have a 400 metre climb over 2.5 kilometres. From here we follow a ridge of undulating terrain before a steady downhill with one steep descent half way down. Our final 2 kilometres is a flat walk in to the village.

Tonight we stay and dine with the Pombei tribe.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek Pombei to Tiwae - 16.8 kms Ascend 980m Descend 750m 7.5 hours + breaks

Our section of the GR NORD today is mostly dense forest. Soon after our departure from the Tiwae tribe we have a steep ascent of 275 metres over less than 1 kilometre. For the next 5 kilometres we have a number of steep ups and downs that are much less in length than our first climb.

Half way we have another steep descent (250 metres) over less than 1 kilometre.

With 5 kilometres to go we have one more big up and down before a flatish walk over the last 2 kilometres into the Tiwae tribe.

We will experience a number of water crossings on this section, making water sandals a good inclusion to your trekking gear for this trek.

Tonight we stay and dine with the Tiwae Tribe.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
